Our Results
This highlights our results during the fiscal year September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009.
The Literacy and Cultural Connections (LCC) School Partnership Program:
- Changing Worlds' LCC program was implemented in 7 Chicago Public Schools in some of the City's most diverse and under-served neighborhoods: Albany Park, Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing, Logan Square, Pilsen, Uptown and West Ridge. The program reached over 7,000 students, teachers and families.
- Over 93% of the students were from low-income households; 85% of whom were of African-American and Latino descent.
- Approximately 546 students in 22 classrooms participated in 13-15 week classroom residencies, and were engaged through hands-on, integrated literacy and arts experiential activities.
- We facilitated workshops for 175 classroom teachers in the 7 schools, providing them with culturally relevant best practices in arts and literacy integration.
Teacher Professional Development Programming:
- We developed a new 6-week leadership series featuring a group of teachers and teaching artists who support our professional development initiatives by exploring ways to integrate culture, arts and literacy in core curriculum content areas.
- Our week long Summer Institute, hosted by Columbia College, engaged 34 teachers and artists in hands-on experiential learning activities and shared best practice teaching strategies in arts integration, literacy and multiculturalism.
Community Outreach Programs and Traveling Exhibits:
- The traveling exhibits engaged over 4,000 (students, families, teachers and community members) through nine venues in the Chicago area, ranging from Lukancic School in Romeoville, Premier Bank in Wilmette, the Skokie Library and Oakton Community College to name a few.
