After-School Arts and Culture Programs
What are the programs?
As young artists, students explore the work of professional artists and of their personal art through the lens of internal and external cultural influences. They are encouraged to foster a deeper recognition and appreciation of self, sharing their culture through artistic expression. They learn and apply art techniques and principles in creating art, and develop the vocabulary and confidence to talk about their own art and that of the professional artist.
At the end of the residency component of the program, students produce interdisciplinary final art projects, performances and student work exhibitions. This has included quilts, dramatic performances, murals, dance showcases and wire sculptures.
For whom?
Changing Worlds' After-School Arts and Culture Programs partner with schools and community-based organizations to implement cultural dance, drama and visual art residencies for youth in grades K-12.
How are the programs implemented?
The programs are led by a Changing Worlds teaching artist and usually occur in eight or ten week residencies. The residencies provide students with hands-on arts experiences that engage, inspire and provide educational and arts-based learning for young people of all ages. Residencies often utilize the stories of students' lives and cultures with the arts as a springboard to teaching core concepts in fine arts, cultural awareness and social studies.
